Pressed metal became part of Melbourne’s architecture during the late nineteenth and early twentieth centuries. It appeared beneath shop awnings, across verandah soffits and inside theatres, hotels, railway stations and public buildings.
The detail suited a city enjoying extraordinary prosperity. During the 1880s, Melbourne became known as “Marvellous Melbourne,” with the wealth of the gold-rush era flowing into ambitious buildings throughout the city and its growing suburbs. Pressed metal gave architects and builders a practical way to bring intricate craftsmanship and ornate decoration into these spaces.
Many examples remain above Melbourne’s streets today. Restoring these linings preserves a small piece of the craftsmanship that shaped the city.

Pressed metal soffits and awning linings remain a feature of heritage buildings throughout Melbourne and regional Victoria. When water ingress, vehicle damage or renovation and extension works cause deterioration, we assess the existing structure and restore it in line with any heritage overlay requirements.
Matching Original Pressed Metal
We hold an extensive range of pressed metal products still manufactured in the original imperial measurements. This is particularly valuable for heritage repair and restoration, where like-for-like replacement or seamless patching is required to retain as much heritage fabric as possible.
When an original pattern has disappeared from production, the surviving metal becomes our starting point. Our experience with heritage production techniques and knowledge of traditional pressed metal manufacture allows us to reproduce these lost patterns. We can use an original panel to cast a die and fabricate the mould required to press new panels — recreating a complete heritage soffit lining in its original design, even when the pattern has been out of production for decades.

This Chapel Street verandah still had its original pressed metal soffit, but deterioration had reached the point where the entire lining needed replacing. Fortunately, every profile in the original design remained in our catalogue at its original imperial dimensions, so we could rebuild the layout exactly as it once was — same patterns, same borders, same proportions.

2. The Leviathan Building, Bourke and Swanston Streets:
At the Leviathan Building, the brief was similar: a full soffit replacement using patterns from our catalogue because we already held the original profiles. The lining went in like-for-like, true to the building’s original design.
